Summary: Tips for keeping your workstation secure.
Overview

Much of the information accessed and used by KU employees is not intended for public use. Social security numbers, grades, medical records and individual research are some examples of private or confidential information. Since much of this information is stored or displayed on desktop computers that may be publicly accessible, it is the responsibility of each user to control access to the information.
Here are some measures that all KU staff should use to help increase data security:

What you can do
  • Position your monitor away from public view.
  • Always log off of all systems when leaving for the day. In addition to the security concerns, the Energy Conservation Policy requires that all computers and monitors be turned off if users are away from their desks for several hours.
  • Lock your workstation when away from your desk for any length of time.
    • To lock a Windows workstation, press Ctrl+Alt+Del, and select "Lock Workstation". You will be required to enter your workstation password to unlock the computer.
  • Do not store university-related information on your workstation. Use secure network drives.
  • Never keep password information in your workspace (notes, post-it's, etc)
