KU Online ID's are used for various purposes at the University of Kansas. Some of the more common uses include: enrollment information, grades, financial payments, KU Card information, email, and banking information. Passwords are an essential aspect of computer security providing an important front line of protection for electronic resources by preventing unauthorized access. Sharing this information may result in the compromise of your accounts as well as University systems. Account information sharing is also a leading cause of identity theft.
If you share your KU Online ID, you give others access to everything you can access with your KU Online ID. You may even be responsible for anything they do in your stead. Sharing your account with someone else is a violation of KU policy, and may cause you to lose access privileges and be subject to disciplinary actions.

The KU Password Policy
The KU Password Policy establishes a standard for creating and protecting good passwords. These standards include:
- Passwords should be at least seven (7) characters long
- Passwords should not contain and generally known information (such as your name or address)
- Passwords should include a combination of numbers and upper and lower case characters
- Sharing or allowing another person to use your individual account password is a violation of policy (unless they are an Information Technology professional assisting you with a technical problem).
Additional information on choosing a good password can be found on the IT Security Office website (www.security.ku.edu/)
